SharePoint navigation: customizable icons and colors

Smarter Navigation now lets you set custom icons and colors per item, control visibility, and decide if links are clickable or open in a new tab in SharePoint.

5 Min Read

We’ve released a new version of our Smarter Navigation in the Microsoft App Store. With this update, you can tailor your navigation even more precisely to your needs. We’ve added several new configuration options for each node in the navigation tree—most notably, you can assign your own icons and colors. Here’s a quick overview of what’s new.

SharePoint navigation icons

With the new version of Smarter Navigation, you can assign a custom icon to every node in the tree. This lets you adapt the look of your navigation to your organization’s style. Click the edit icon next to a node to open its settings and choose an icon from the built-in picker. All icons available in Microsoft’s Fluent UI are supported.

Custom color per navigation item

You can also choose a custom color for each navigation item in the settings dialog. Use this to highlight important nodes or to color-code items with shared characteristics. The picker makes selection easy, and we render both the icon and the item title in your chosen color.

Control visibility per item

You can now decide whether a node is visible in the navigation. This is especially helpful when large structures are added automatically (for example, via script). Simply hide nodes you don’t need right now—without deleting them—and bring them back later when required. Toggle visibility directly via the eye icon next to the node or from the edit dialog.

Make items clickable (or not)

You can also control whether a navigation item is clickable. In some cases, users shouldn’t be able to open certain lists or libraries from the navigation (for example, due to permissions). Set those items to “not clickable.”

If an item is clickable, you can also choose to open the link in a new browser tab.

We hope this gives you a clear picture of what’s possible with the latest Smarter Navigation.

Due to extensive new development and rising salary costs, we will adjust the base price of Smarter Navigation as of 2023‑07‑01.
