Today, I wanted to shed some light on a peculiar discovery I made within PowerApps, something that might resonate with many developers who’ve grappled with the Canvas control’s peculiarities. PowerApps is indeed a game-changer for many businesses, but like every tool, it has its quirks.

The Challenge: Rearranging Datacards

If you’ve dabbled with the Canvas control, you’d know the seemingly frustrating task of trying to rearrange the datacards. In most design platforms or development tools, rearranging layers or elements typically involve a z-index or a simple drag-and-drop functionality. But with PowerApps? It seems almost baffling that there’s no intuitive way to alter the order of datacards in the tree view.

Like many of you, I found myself stuck in this loop: whenever I needed to change the order, I ended up creating a new card and tediously copy-pasting all the controls from the old card. Annoying, right?

The Revelation: A Magical Y-Value

Well, here’s the good news: there’s a way around it, albeit undocumented and not-so-intuitive.

The trick? Adjusting the y-value of the datacard.

Yes, it’s as simple (and unexpected) as that! Changing the y-value of the datacard can magically rearrange your cards. It’s almost as if the y-value acts as an unofficial z-index for the cards.

This gem of a trick was spotted on a PowerApps User Forum, and it certainly was a Eureka moment for me.
